our story

Est. 2017

We didn’t set out to become a flag company. We just wanted better pride flags. The kind we would actually want to fly ourselves.

A few years ago we kept running into mass produced flags made by companies with no connection to Queer people or the community they were profiting from. The designs felt dated (we're looking at you Lesbian flag with the lips). The quality was awful and nobody making them seemed to actually understand the meaning behind the flags themselves. So we started making our own.

Our founder comes from a family of flagmakers and grew up around flag construction, so what started as a few handmade rainbow flags slowly turned into a full blown flag shop. Eight years later, we’re still making every flag in San Diego with the same mindset: build things well, stand behind them, and make flags actually worth flying.

We’re makers first. Every stitch is a choice. Every flag is made with care by Queer people who know the history, construction, and meaning behind these designs because they’re part of our lives too.

We’re not neutral. We make protest flags. We respond when things happen. We lend out giant flags for marches, donate flags to local organizations, and sometimes send a free one to someone who just came out and needs a flag worth flying. That responsibility matters to us.

Our goal is simple: to ensure every Queer person has a flag worth flying. Made by their community, with the craft and care they deserve.

Our Values

integrity

Every choice we make is filtered through one questions: does it serve the community? That means manufacturing our own flags and never chasing cheaper production at the expense of quality. It means paying a living wage while keeping our margins thin to remain accessible to our community. It also means recycling and using sustainable packaging and materials. We never take the easy route when the right route exists.

Craft

There's a long history of Queer people being handed cheap, throwaway products and told to be grateful for them. Pride Flag SD was built in direct opposition to that. Every hand-sewn flag is a statement that our community deserves the same standard of craft as any other - something built to last. Handmade isn't a limitation; it's a choice that says the person flying this flag is worth the time.

Community

We started this brand with only a few listings. We now have an entire pride flag collection based off customer requests. Protest flags get made when we need them and we lend out and gift flags when someone can't afford them.
