The 11 Stripe Rainbow Flag was created in 2018 at the beginning of Pride Month in Seattle, Washington. The design is a variation of the Philadelphia Pride Flag which was created in 2017. In addition to the Black and Brown stripes, the 11 Stripe Flag features the colors of the Transgender Pride flag designed by Monica Helms. In its entirety, the flag symbolizes inclusion of all Queer identities while recognizing the diversity of identity and experience that exist within the community.

Tumblr user Salem (they/she) designed the Agender flag, the Demigirl flag, the Demiboy flag, and the Deminonbinary flag in 2014 to highlight the diversity of identities within the genderless community. This is just one of many versions of the Aro Pride Flag. The design was adapted from an earlier version of the Aromantic flag by Tumblr user Cameron in 2014. Community members opted to switch to hues of green instead of yellow because many have sensitivity issues to the color. The green hues represent the spectrum of romanticism and all arospec identities.

Bi this flag! In 1999, Michael Page designed the Bisexual Pride Flag in 1999 but the colors used in the flag predate Page’s design. The colors Pink, Purple, and Blue used in combination were already popular within the Bi community. Page aimed to maximize Bisexual Pride and visibility with the flag’s design and to create a symbol for those in the community who did not feel fully represented by other Pride Flags.

The term Demi was developed in 2006 by user sonofzeal on an online forum, the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN.) The Gender Fluid Pride Flag celebrates those who reject and bend traditional gender binaries. The creator, JJ Poole, created the flag design after being disappointed with the lack of symbolic representation within the Genderfluid or Genderflux community. JJ was inspired by other Queer flag creators and the power of young people in the LGBTQIA+ community. For JJ, the five stripes represent the breadth of Gender Fluid identities and the different identities of folks who are a part of the Genderfluid community.

The Genderqueer Pride Flag embraces gender as a spectrum and does not subscribe to preconceived notions of masculine or feminine. Marilyn Roxie, who designed the flag, chose a purple stripe to represent androgyny because it is a mix of pink and blue, colors traditionally associated with men and women. The green stripe is an inversion of purple, representing those identify as outside of the gender binary.

Nothing beats the original. In 1978 Gilbert Baker created the first Rainbow Flag. The Original Pride Flag featured 8 stripes, as opposed to the well-known 6-stripe Rainbow Pride Flag. Gilbert Baker’s Historic Rainbow Flag included Hot Pink and Turquoise stripes. Due to manufacturing issues, the two stripes were left off the flag and it evolved into the 6-stripe Pride Flag commonly seen. This is our tribute to Gilbert Baker and his historic legacy - recreating his original design.

Flag designer Morgan Carpenter said it best when describing the Intersex flag’s design. The purple circle at its center is “unbroken and unornamented, symbolizing wholeness and completeness, and our potentialities.” The flag was created in 2013 by Carpenter who works for Intersex Human Rights Australia. Creators envisioned the flag being used and adopted by any Intersex individual in any human rights affirming community context.

The Leather Pride flag was born in Chicago in 1999, first appearing at the International Mr. Leather Competition. Since then, it has become a popular symbol adopted by Leather community members. The stripes are grounded by a bright red heart that dominates the left upper quadrant of the flag. Flag designer Tony DeBlase intentionally left the symbolism behind the color choices up to Leather community members to determine for themselves.
